Tar Wars is a one-time, one-hour classroom presentation requiring minimal preparation and follow-up. The program can be implemented at any time during the school year, and the scripted lesson plan can be easily incorporated into your classroom’s daily curriculum. During the classroom presentation, students will engage in a series of activities designed to increase their knowledge of the short-term effects of tobacco use, help them identify reasons why people use tobacco products, and prompt them to think critically about tobacco advertising.

PRESENTATION
The cigarette is the most common method of
smoking tobacco. Tobacco smoking is the
act of inhaling the smoke of dried or cured
leaves of the tobacco plant and inhaling
the smoke for pleasure, for ritualistic
or social purposes, self-medication, as
well as to satisfy a physiological dependence
on nicotine.
Tobacco smoke contains nicotine and harmane
(a MAO inhibitor), which combined give rise
to addictive stimulant and euphoriant properties.
Nicotine disturbs metabolism and suppresses
appetite. This is because nicotine, like
many stimulants, increases blood sugar. Medical
research has determined that chronic tobacco
smoking can lead to many health problems,
particularly lung cancer, emphysema, and
cardiovascular disease.
The link between passive/secondhand smoke
(also called environmental tobacco smoke)
and cardiovascular related disability and
death also has been established. In
the United States , about 37,000 to 40,000
people die each year from heart and blood
vessel disease caused by other peoples smoke. Of
these about 35,000 non-smokers die from coronary
heart disease, this includes heart attack. Passive
smoke increases the death rate among non-smokers
to 70 percent.
DISCUSSION:
Short Term Effects : Short
term effects of nicotine ingestion include
increases in heart rate, blood flow to the
heart and blood pressure. Cause dizziness,
drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea and breathing
problems. Systemic effects include: agitation,
headache, sweating, dizziness, auditory and
visual disturbances, confusion, weakness
and lack of coordination.
Long Term Effects : As
smokers continue to smoke over time and consume
nicotine, they will also experience long-term
effects including coronary heart disease,
stroke and a variety of cancers, including
cancer of the mouth, esophagus, lungs, kidneys,
bladder and larynx. Smoking and inhaling
nicotine over a long period of time can also
cause blindness, as well as a risk of blood
clots in women. A transient increase in blood
pressure, followed by hypertension, bradycardia,
paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, or cardiac
standstill may be observed. In severe poisoning,
tremor, convulsions and coma occur. Faintness,
prostration, cyanosis and dyspnoea progress
to collapse. Death may occur from
paralysis of respiratory muscles and/or central
respiratory failure.
ACTIVITY 1
Bring number of straw and cut them into three.
Let all the student breath through the
straw. Ask them how they feel breathing
through the straw. Explain the effect of
cigarette clogging the passage of every
cigarette users.
ACTIVITY 2
Bring an ashtray being used by smokers. Let
them smell and ask them how they feel on
person who will kiss them and smell like
it.
ACTIVITY 3
Cigarette expenses computation (P_/pack x
_pack x _day x _week x _month x 12 =
P_). Ask them what suppose they can buy
from it.
P75.00/pack x 2pack
= 150.00 x 7days = 1,050.00 x 4weeks
= 4,200.00 x 12months = P50,400.00

ACTIVITY 4
Nicotine is the main ingredient in tobacco
products. Nicotine color is dark brown,
in syrup-like liquid form it'll be light
yellow. Nicotine is one of the most toxic
of all poisons and has a rapid onset of
action. Transdermal nicotine suppressed
nicotine intake from cigarette smoking
by 3%, 10% and 40% on average in the 21,
42 and 63 mg/day conditions. The behavioral
characteristics that determine tobacco
addiction are similar to those that determine
addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine.
Bring half glass of water and pour three
drops of yellow ink/black ink. Explain the
intake effects:
Acute Poisoning
Ingestion symptoms of nicotine poisoning
may develop within 15 minutes. The onset
of symptoms is much more rapid after the
ingestion of liquid nicotine (e.g. insecticide
preparations) Death may occur within 5
minutes of ingestion of concentrated nicotine
insecticides. Four to eight milligrams
orally may produce serious symptoms in
individuals not habituated to nicotine.
Gastrointestinal signs and symptoms occur
first and include mouth and throat burning
followed by profuse salivation, nausea,
vomiting, abdominal pain and occasionally
diarrhea. More severe intoxication results
in dizziness, weakness and confusion, progressing
to convulsions, hypertension and coma.
Intense vagal stimulation may cause transient
cardiac standstill or paroxysmal atrial
fibrillation. Death is usually due to paralysis
of respiratory muscles and/or central respiratory
failure.
QUIT SMOKING: Your decision
to quit smoking will yield many benefits
such as:
live longer and better
lower your chances of having a heart
attack, stroke, or cancer
improve your chances of having a healthy
baby
save people you live with especially
your children
more money to spend on things other than
cigarettes
